The KUMU is a high end wooden speargun constructed from multiple pieces of laminated Teak and carbon fiber. Made by renowned spearfishing Brand Orca based in Spain, who specialize in exclusive wooden and carbon products for spearfishing.
The KUMU is fitted with twin 14.5mm Micro ID Sigalsub natural latex made by Primeline USA, this is the gold standard for speargun rubber and is the highest quality, the Micro ID rubber has an internal 1.5mm hole rather than 3mm, giving you essentially the same power as a normal 16mm band but with less drag due to the outer diameter being thinner.
KUMU guns from 90-110cm are fitted with a 7.5mm Hunt spear (optional 8mm for 110cm), 120 & 130 are fitted with 8mm and the 140cm is fitted with an 8.5mm spear.
The speargun is fitted with an Ermes Sub trigger mechanism, known for their smooth release and high quality.
The KUMU is balanced with lead to be neutrally buoyant like its carbon predecessor the ORCA EVO, this makes the gun extremely light in the water and highly maneuverable, but due to its large mass it is exceptionally stable unlike lighter carbon spearguns. Thanks to the wooden material you dont feel the mass in the water making the 90cm Kumu feel like a 70cm carbon railgun.
The KUMU is reinforced with carbon fiber sections and parts to give extra rigidity and strength to the gun without adding excess weight. The gun is fitted with a molded right handed grip which is very comfortable and grippy with or gloves or bare hands.
All the ORCA spearguns are exceptionally smooth to shoot and have plenty of power to take down any fish of choice. We recommend the 90 or 100cm for use in the UK.
**All in stock guns come without reels – if you are pre ordering – a reel can be fitted if requested.**
Why Wood?
Wood is the perfect material for a speargun, it is strong and heavy but buoyant in the water. The mass and weight of the gun absorbs most of the recoil and makes your shots more accurate, but because the wood is more buoyant the gun feels almost weightless in the water making it a lot more maneuverable than most aluminium or carbon spearguns.
The wood can also take a lot of abuse and punishment and can be restored and repaired easier, it also means you have less parts that corrode and need to be replaced over time.
Why Teak?
Teak is famous hardwood renowned for its strength and commonly used in luxurious furniture and boat building. Teak is naturally oily and expels water, one of very few types of wood that rejects water naturally and is considered the best hardwood for use in marine environments, requiring no coating and prefers salt water to fresh water. Fresh water is the number one enemy for most woods as it causes rot, however because of the oily nature of teak it is perfectly suited in salt water and only requires a bit of teak oil once a year to refresh its colour and finish as it goes paler over time.
Teak has a straight grain which makes it much stronger than other hardwoods like Mahogany and is preferred for use in boatbuilding and spearguns because of this. The straight grain makes the wood easier to refinish and sand and requires less work than other hardwoods.
Why Laminated ?
The Kumu is made from 3 sections of Teak laminated together, this is to have the grain running in opposite directions creating the strongest possible setup to reduce flex.
When you use a single section of wood for a speargun it has less rigidity, it can flex easier and warp and imperfections can also propagate easier and damage the stock. When you cut the wood down into sections to laminate you can stop any imperfections or damage from propagating into the other sections and by gluing the wood together it adds a much stronger bond than the wood itself.
