Want us to make your speargun band?

When ordering your length, please choose one of the pre-made band options using the check boxes provided. Here is a description of each option:

1. Rob Allen dyneema wishbone – closed loop band, common setup for RA guns.
2. Looped wishbones with removable bridle – perfect if you need to undo the bridle to fix it to your speargun.
3. Rob Allen metal wire wishbone and tie line – used to replace stainless steel wishbones for a sharp spear notch. Another closed loop band.

What length rubber do I need?

If you are not sure what length you need for your speargun please feel free to get in touch. However the best way forward is to check with your manufacturer if its not shown in the images above. As a general rule of thumb you can use the following equation:

Measure from the furthest notch/shark fin to the start of the muzzle hole
Multiply by 2
Divide by 2.7
= number of cm needed.

Remember that not all gun rubbers are made equally and the same is true for spears. Some spears work better when powered by a specific rubber and visa versa.
Also, be sure not to overpower your spear as this will lead to inaccuracies in your shots. Of course if you are unsure then please get in touch.

If you need any assistance, please email enquiries@spearfishing.co.uk.

Please note these configurations are for RA guns, if you need bands for other manufactures please get in touch.

You can purchase the rubber by the CM at 28p per cm. We sell wishbones, tie line and insertion tools separately on the site. Please also note that these band lengths are designed for Rob Allen gun configurations.

The trade mark blue colour of RA rubber is more than just a brand feature. The chemical composition increases the protection from the harsh ocean environment and boosts performance. ย We use less additives giving a purer long lasting performance.

Do you know why Rob Allen guns are so powerful?

The main difference that makes RA more powerful over the typical speargun is the type of latex used for their bands but its a big difference.

If you look at traditional rubber it will mostly be a block colour (often black throughout), if you look at RA rubber you will see its a natural gum colour and has rings in it like when you cut a tree in half, this is down to the way its manufactured.

Most traditional gun rubber is made via an โ€˜extrudedโ€™ manufacturing process like squirting toothpaste out of a tube.ย  The thickness is dictated by the size of the hole.ย  This is much cheaper to make in comparison and the quality suffers because of all the additives needed to cure it so quickly.

Extruded rubber is about 30% cheaper on average but has poor notch toughness and loses its elasticity at a faster rate.

By comparison RA latex is made via a dipping process like how you make candles. The latex is repeatedly dipped until the correct thickness is achieved.ย  For this process you can only use 100% pure natural latex (tree sap).ย  This is why its always gum coloured.ย  The blue outer colour is a UV protector to prolong the bands life.

The best elasticity comes from pure latex. The purer it is the better, the more additives needed the worse it becomes.

RA bands are made with the purest latex, this does make it expensive though – but do you buy a fantastic gun and then fit cheap rubber?

RA have tested most manufacturers from around the world and only use what they have found to be the best. When loaded and held at a specific stretch, all rubbers lose their elasticity to some degree, some more than others. Poor rubber can lose as much as 30% over 1 hour.

A fun fact that not many people know : )
